Not because I suddenly want a fringe. Although, maybe.
I’m not nostalgic for the 90s. I’m nostalgic for how mysterious everyone looked.
For a version of getting dressed that felt more romantic, more instinctive and a little less explained.
That’s the strange thing about nostalgia. It doesn’t make you want the past back. It makes you miss the feeling of it. Memory is selective like that. You forget what was ordinary and keep the atmosphere. The light in a room. Someone’s perfume. A song playing from another part of the house. A coat someone wore once that somehow stayed with you for years.
The details get blurrier. The feeling gets stronger.
Fashion memories work the same way. Sometimes it’s Nicole Kidman’s fringe. Sometimes it’s a print you were obsessed with, a slip dress you never owned, a pair of boots you can still picture. Something you saw once and filed away forever.
A faded floral that swears it reminds you of something. Worn leather. Old silver. Lace that feels a little haunted. A tiny cardigan. Brown suede. A dress that looks better slightly undone.
Pieces that don’t feel new, even when they are. I think that’s what I’m craving.
Not another perfectly decoded reference. Not knowing immediately what year, trend or aesthetic something belongs to. Just looking at someone and wondering: where did she get that, why does that work, who is she?
There used to be more room for mystery. Before everything was named, explained and turned into a moodboard. Before we got so good at recognising the reference that we forgot to feel it.
So this isn’t a 90s revival. It isn’t really about recreating anything.
It’s about the strange emotional residue clothes leave behind. Romantic, slightly undone, a little witchy, difficult to place. Pieces that feel like they already have a story.
Maybe nostalgia was never about going backwards. Maybe it’s wanting the world to feel that mysterious again.

MOODY is Australia’s answer to the serendipity Americans take for granted. The room where founders, operators, investors, corporates and creatives are in the same group chat, and it turns out they needed each other. These are the girls who get it and we are in a MOOD.
This newsletter is the highlight reel. The WhatsApp is where we actually live.
